Final week cancelled in
unprecedented move!
DejaVu all over again! For the second time this season, a
week was postponed. Correction, cancelled!
Hurricane Bonnie Is Still Undefeated
Teams may win some and
lose some but hurricanes usually go undefeated. That was the case on
Wednesday night when Hurricane Bonnie whipped through the Rockaways,
depositing an unprecedented amount of rain and lighting the skies with a
fierce lightning display. Because the weather hit so hard and so early,
RBVL Commissioner Patty Moule was able to call off the matches before
anyone trekked to Riis Park. Additionally, after much discussion with
the executive board, several captains, the sponsors at Jameson’s and the
weatherman, the games were not rescheduled for Thursday night either.
They simply were dropped and will not be made up with the playoffs
looming this weekend. That means that the standings from last week
become the final standings.
The top two teams in each division receive a bye in the first round of
the playoffs and will play their first match of the day at 12:00 noon.
All of the other playoff teams will begin at 10:30 AM sharp. These
match-ups will pit the 3rd place teams against the 6th
place teams and the 4th place teams against the 5th
place teams. Court assignments will be posted on the boardwalk in the
morning. Remember, nets are available at 9:45 AM and forfeit time for
game 1 is 10:30 AM. Allow enough time to set-up and start promptly.
On
Saturday at 12:00 PM, the First Annual Bud Bowl will take place between
the only two teams to miss the playoffs, the Brooklyn Transplants and
the Kerry Hills Pub. Two of the best party teams in Rockaway will battle
it out in a match that awards a case of beer to the winner and a lovely
consolation prize to the loser. The Transplants will try to set a league
record for attendance and odds-makers like their chances.
No
one knew it at the time but last week’s Beach division battle between
the Mahooshkas and It’s All Good determined the regular season champion.
With Laverne and Shirley leading the way, It’s All Good won the match
and took the series against their rivals 2-1, which gave them the
tiebreaker edge. Amazingly, these were the only two teams tied for any
position in any division. The mathematical improbability of this
statistic even had Murph muttering to himself. (Or was that just his
normal muttering to himself.) Congratulations to the other regular
season point leaders – Freedhand’s Court Champs, Stealth, the Ramblers
and Gamblers and Sands Point Physical Therapy.
Many inquiries were made to this reporter about last week’s cryptic
note, “Irish Eyes weren’t smiling for the West Islip Girls, as Johnny
Blue Eyes was MIA at the Irish Circle.” but I have been sworn to
secrecy. Good luck, amateur sleuths. Who are the oldest active man and
woman still playing in the RBVL? We want to know. Team captains should
submit entries to Patty or Joe ASAP. Hats off to Bugsy, Joe and Craig
Samu for making it to Jameson’s Wednesday night! Does this mean that
Cubby’s perfect attendance streak is over? Jimmy Mack will make a ruling
shortly.
Jameson’s has offered to host an impromptu post-game party Saturday
afternoon when all of the action has concluded. It will be a great way
to end the season for anyone looking to go out one last time with his or
her volleyball buddies. If you don’t have a block party or a date with
the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy make sure you stop by. Remember, the
RBVL Awards Dinner will be held at the Beach Club on Friday, 9/17 from
8:30 PM to 12:30 AM. The cost is $60 and it includes an open bar,
bottled beer and hot food with music by Head Over Heels. Captains are
collecting money as we speak and the first 140 people will be confirmed.
In the past we have never had to turn anyone away but this year’s
expanded league has produced large turnouts at all of the parties and
the dinner promises to be booked solid.
In case Hurricane
Charley hits on Saturday, the rain date for the playoffs is Sunday 8/15.
However, with the whole day available to get the games in on Saturday, a
postponement is very unlikely. Come to the beach prepared for inclement
weather and be prepared to wait out any passing showers. There will be
plenty of food available so eat, drink and be merry – and wait patiently |
